From Lifeteen:

ALLELUIA!

Well, here we are at long last, we've begun the great season of Easter so I thought I would take this opportunity to share some thoughts about this special time in our Liturgical year.

This season is perhaps the most important time of the year for us as Christians. It’s a fifty-day long celebration from the day of the Resurrection on Easter Sunday through to the birthday of the Church on Pentecost Sunday. The word itself comes from the Norse language, Eoster, which refers to their season of “the new sun,” a time of rebirth. This notion of rebirth, which is anticipated throughout the Lenten season, is brought to fullness in the fifty days of Easter.

The flow of the season is divided into two parts, the forty days leading up to the Feast of the Ascension, and the ten days between that and the celebration of Pentecost. The first forty days focus on our passage from death to new life and should be an chance for us to rejoice and encourage with one another as a parish community in the areas of our lives that we have allowed Christ to heal us and to stay the course of our faith in the areas that we still need to completely turn over to Him. The days after the Feast of the Ascension move to emphasize the power and the promise of the Holy Spirit as we prepare for the celebration of the Church’s birthday on Pentecost.

The one theme that continually runs through the Easter season is that we should never let ourselves forget that we are called to proclaim with word and action the risen Christ alive in our hearts.

ALLELUIA!

Peace,
Fr. John
